Title Frank Lloyd Wright - Not even close...

Complaint The write-up expressed a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired home. The pictures and description were inviting. The owner asked to speak to me directly which I usually take as a sign or an assurance for both parties. I used google Earth to look over the neighborhood--quite nice--minutes away from Lake Michigan. I sent $700 for the 4/br, 4/b home as the weekend rental fee--although now the site posts a lesser amount for the number in our party. This fee included the customary $100 cleaning fee--there were five in our party. We were shocked and dismayed upon our arrival. The house smelled of dusty old books and never getting thoroughly cleaned. The cement concrete entryway was cracked and broken in many places. All the furniture had tired old cushions--many dirty and threadbare--there was popcorn between the cushions on the couch!

The owner was rushing around putting old tired sheets on the two twin (camp-type) mattresses. He was vacuuming the old dirty carpeting. He moved to his room -- Yes, an owner occupied home! He swept stuff off the counters and pulled mismatched linens out of a hodgepodge collection. Towels were questionable. Each bedroom had beds that had been there for many years. The king had a piece of plywood between the mattresses--ugh. The window treatments were off the tracks, cracked and broken, mismatched, and all were dirty.

The kitchen was atrocious. All his personal items filled the refrigerator. The sink was left dirty, the sprayer attachment broken, and the sponge was filty. Every cabinet was filled with items that were either dirty or unusable. (We went out and bought disposables). The built-in ovens were throw backs to the 60's. A pile of wood (under a giant tarp) left on the carport for a fire if we wanted to make one--no kindling, starters or wood in the house-hmmm. Floors dirty, old mismatched furniture touted as "antiques."

So, imagine a tired old home. Windows with broken seals that result in a cloudy view of the world inside and out. This bordered on a horder house--filled with stuff. No directions or welcome packet explaining the heating--no cell phone in which to contact the owner--no local info for anything--This was such a disappointment for all of us.

My attempts at a refund from the owner have gone unanswered and the listing company unresponsive. We really got stung on this one. What a disappointment.

Comment: I would not recommend this property to anyone without first seeing the inside. I also logged a complaint with the FTC regarding this vacation rental. Our extended family (9 adults, 5 kids) stayed in this house for a long weekend. The house is spacious and can certainly accommodate a large group. It is in a great neighborhood and the outdoor space is nice. It was evident that the sheets and bath towels had been recently laundered, but any other cleaning before our arrival was at best, cursory. Most troubling was the state of the kitchen and bathrooms. Let me start with the kitchen--the plates, bowls, pots & pans, etc. needed a good scrubbing before they could be used (I should also note that there is no dishwasher). The house was not stocked with any cleaning supplies (as far as we could tell), not even a clean sponge. There was a drawer of badly worn towels near the sink, but the towels appeared to be dirty. No trash bags were provided either. Moreover, the oven was so dirty that we decided it was best not to use it at all. This was quite a disappointment for us, since one of the main reasons we opted to rent the house rather than stay in a hotel was so that we could cook large family meals and avoid going to restaurants. As for the bathrooms, there was dust, spider webs, and hair all over the tubs, sinks, and toilets. We tried to clean the bathrooms as best we could with extra towels, etc., but it was still pretty unappealing to use the bathrooms. The living spaces and bedrooms were quite dusty. Family members with allergies to dust suffered during our entire stay. Additionally, the dryer malfunctioned badly during our stay (yet another perk we had counted on, but then couldn't use). When the dryer was turned on, it emitted a terrible ammonia smell. The furnishings of the house itself were also disappointing. Oh how we wish we had seen this page before we agreed to rent the property. We had hoped that the family would enjoy relaxing time together in this rental, but due to the lack of cleanliness, we tried to limit our time in the house as much as possible. We wished that we could stay somewhere else, but we arrived with tired young children and we quickly (probably too quickly) decided to make the most of the house as it was. We stated our concerns/complaints to the owner, but were largely ignored. We did receive our full deposit back, but still feel terribly mislead by the description this property as it is posted on craigslist. In summary, it is a large house in a great neighborhood, but personally, we would rather camp and be surrounded by "good, honest dirt" than stay at this house and be surrounded by a stranger's dirt.
