2. Beware of Mr. Abott

Transferred USD 1075 for the above rental to "Mr. Abotts" accountant - Ristawati Djakaria, at Washington Mutual Bank,Seattle, on 14/5/08. Mr. Abbott failed to confirm receipt of deposit. Contact numbers had been temporarily disconnected. Eventually he emailed to say transfer had not been received, the apartment was still available and he would think of another way to get the deposit from me. As naive as I was, I suggested credit card - his response was that his merchant account was temporarily not functioning !!. I have not heard from him since then and had to book other accommodation. Beware of rentals that appear too good to be true and numbers that are "out of order". !!

3. 4 bdrm luxury near central park

Apparently a scam since I saw his name on another site. $300 per nite for 4 bdrm, 4 .5 bath designer apt. (Terrace, pool, etc.).
I have been emailing him about this for several days and keep getting responses, forms, instructions to wire money. Even got an email reference from Gary Gilford who was checking out and flying home to Dubai that day.
Did not rent this place and very glad of it.

4. Manhattan, NY Vacation Rental Scam

Months ago I found a suitable apartment in midtown. I flew my family from California for a wedding and had looked forward to staying together in an affordable place. I paid a $150 downpayment to Mr. Morales via Paypal. We corresponded at least 20 times about details and as late as the day before the arrival I e-mailed him and tried to call him on the cell phone but got no response. When my son called him already in New York he acted very surprised that we were coming and only then contaced the owner. The owner however had already rented the place for a week to a family from France but seeing our dire siutation let us stay at the place for one night. We had to scramble and get a hotel for much more money for the remainder of our stay.
Mr. Morales has several apartments listed on various websites. Beware!

5. Shorted on Deposit Refund

We paid $4300 plus 2 cleanings and put up a $1500 security deposit. They refunded the deposit with a check and cash. It was $200 short and when we talked to them they said they had put $400 cash in the mail instead of the $200 we received. They were very unresponsive with maintenance issues and the owner of the management company was very rude in our phone conversations with her. We had used them once before a couple of years ago for a week rental and had no problems.

6. Faith Patrick Vacation Home

Representative from this organization has sold me a vacation rental that does not exist and has absconded with $900.00 of my deposit. I received a rental agreement from Faith Patrick Vacation Homes and in good faith, sent my payment to the person claiming to be a representative of this organization. It turns out that this business does not exist at all and no contact can be made with a live individual.

8. Have you rented from Marjorie Dorin in Hamptons?

Have you rented from Marjorie Dorin in Hamptons?
What was your experience? Please, let us know (lenagurba@gmail.com). Our family rented her cottage in summer of 2009. We encountered lots of problems with the rental. However, the worst is we can’t get our deposit back and received outlandish and unsubstantiated demands for more. It would help to know whether others went through something similar and can share their experiences dealing with Ms. Dorin. Very much obliged for your help solving our problem.

9. bed bugs - crooked landlord and disingenuous Rental company

When we arrived in mid February the appartment was not heated. Many things were missing such as light bulbs , shower curtain etc. The beds were covered with very thin tired old duvets. The unit has two doors. To get in the landlord used a crowbar. He did not have spare keys. After dinner , we took a closer look at the beds . The beds were full of bugs and the sheets were dirty. We complained to the landlord who offered another uncleaned smaller unit nearby. We refused and he said he would contact the Feel NY to give our money back. Feel NY investigated summarily. The landlord reneged on his promise, We lost all our money and feelny accused us of being dishonest.

My first accomodation went broke (hotel) - so i googled some vacation rentals for NY. I found a place on backpages and enquired. Once i got an email back i googled the managers name to see what other places they had. He gave me a booking form and told my dates were available.
I deposited $500 security bond + 50% of the booking charge ($1220US in total) we have been in contact several times - but now ive lost contact after enquiring about a cancellation fee (i was getting a little suss so i sent it to see what my options were) - ive had no response - that was 5 days ago. Im sure ive been dudded. Im only glad i didnt travel all the way from Sydney to NY and find i dont have any accomodation.
