1. Martha's Vineyard Vacation Rental

We rented this house immediately after the owner used it. Vineyard rental procedure is to vacate by 10 am, leave a house broom clean, and to clear out all personal items, including food. We found the kitchen dirty and the refrigerator full of food. We called the rental agency to find out if we had perhaps arrived before the cleaning people were able to get in. Shortly thereafter, the owner called to say that they had still been there when the cleaning people arrived, and that in their haste to make the ferry, had left some things undone. He said he hoped we would find his leftover food "a convenience." We spent an hour cleaning out the food, emptying at least 30 bottles, and wiping out the refrigerator, in addition to cleaning the rest of the kitchen, mopping all tile floors, and vacuuming. Only two food items were new and unopened. Mr. Rosen did not offer to send in a cleaning crew, and refuses a monetary concession for leaving the place dirty. The rental agency says that normally they would send in a crew immediately for a fee of $150, but the rental agent was out of town at the time. Mr. Rosen will not reimburse us $150 for our time spent cleaning up his mess. He insists he has done this numerous times, that the leftover food is "a convenience" for the next people, and that we are too exacting. We just know we don't want to have to clean up after the previous tenants when we take over a vacation rental. And this was the owners. In addition to these problems, we found the house smelled of mildew, needed a serious deep cleaning, and was generally shabby and in need of updating. The closets were filthy and cluttered as were the kitchen cupboards, nightstand drawers were full of personal items, the quilts on the beds were musty and dirty, there were cobwebs along the ceiling, and it was filthy behind the furniture.

2. Any one had bad exprerience with Realtor:Barbara Sullivan

We paid a premium cleaning fee in advance and were told the cleaners would show up an hour after we left. But after we returned home, we received an email from Ms Sullivan. At first we thought it was a quick thank you note. Then we were shocked to see all the false complaints. eg. damaged cushions.curtain rod..... We were humiliated and it was quite obvious to us that it was the $250 deposit someone was aiming for. The house was not in tip top shape to start with: most items were old and cheap. We paid $2,000/week to go to the beach, no time to destroy his old house. Wrote back immediately to the agent to explain what Mr. Mike Mabardy, the owner, said were not ture at all. Kindly ask Ms.Sullivan for help as after all she was the one we wrote the check to. Guess what? we never heard from her at all. What they have done to their customers were just not right. Never never paid by check as obviouly ther are Dishonest and Greedy owner and bad realtor who does not care about other people's quality of life.

3. Bed & Breakfast Agency of Boston Complaint

Our main complaint was that there was no mention on the agency's website that both bedroom's beds were on a raised platform that made it impossible to stand up while getting in and out of bed and accessing the wardrobe. One room had its bed against the wall and you had to crawl over the bed.
Would only recommend this apartment to midgets!!!
There were a few things not right : cable box broken, various lights broken, place not very clean. These issues were reported straight away and the cable box was relaced.

4. Poor accomodations, lost deposit

We rented this charming house in Cape Cod. The biggest draw back was the bdrm accomodations. This house should only be listed as a four bedroom. The 5th bdrm is listed as a den. It is actually a room in the finished basement. It was not nicley furnished as the bedrooms upstairs and it had that damp basement smell. Our group did not use that room at all. My older sister slept down there on the unopened sofa bed. She noticed that the arm to the futon in that room was hanging loose but did think anything of it because it was typical basement furniture. One of the windows did not close securely and the screen did not fit in properly. Lots of mosquitos! The furniture looked to be 20-30 years old. The rest of the house was typical charming cape cod furniture, very nice. When we were leaving the cleaning lady told us the arm on the futon s broken. We told her that was the condition when we arrived. The owner kept our $300. You can imagine how upsetting it is to pay for damages caused by others. The coffee pot was broken when we arrived and my husband fixed it. One of the toliet seats had a hinge come loose and we replaced it. . That is the kind of people we are. We explained all of this to the owners. Because of what we observed , we (our group all over the age of 40 ) believe that the cleaning lady did not notice that the arm was broken previous to our arrival. She had a tight time schedule and needed to clean other houses. I would hate to think the owners would be so unscrupulous as to try to make up for low rentals.

5. Not so “Classic” Cape Cod, -beware-

In Orleans MA, near Rock Harbor, there is a rental listed as “Classic Cape Cod”, the layout of the house is fine, the location is perfect, the condition is un-rentable.
At first we thought the house had just not been rented in a long time and just needed a quick touch up, we quickly discovered that the owner obvious does not use a cleaning service, we had to fully clean one bathroom and the other one we just closed the door and did not use it. There are several places where the paint is peeling and there is mold. The game tables, which are to dirty or broken to play, are located in the unfinished basement, presenting an unsafe area to play as everything is out in the open, lawn mower, gas container, paints, gardening tools, fishing rods, line and hooks. The rental is listed as “Kid Friendly”. As for the listed features; the beds were not King or Queen, there was no ice maker, A/C is 2 window units (with exposed fiberglass insulation), the gas grill was rusty, The big tv did not work and the WiFi would not connect to the internet.
When we arrived the heat was not working, the oil tank was empty. The owner gave us instruction to buy diesel oil (a separate expense) & start the furnace ourselves. We ended up calling a local company to start the furnace, they did and informed us that the owner has an account with them for heating oil. There is only 1 smoke detector and no carbon monoxide detectors, I believe this is a rental code violation. We ended up not staying the full rental period.
After several emails with the owner he did agree to a partial refund, but never sent it. In one email the owner said, and I quote, “YOU WANTED CHEAP AND YOU GOT IT!”.
Renters beware, you get what you pay for, or in this case, a lot less then what you pay for.
