1. International Vacation Home.Travel-Didn't get property we rented

My family rented a home in Newport Beach, California for Christmas. When we were about to leave for our vacation we were told that there was an clerical error and we would have to move during our stay. We are a family of 6 and I had already paid in full for our property. We were contacted again while we were enroute and told we were now in the downstairs of the home. The downstairs was smelly, plumbing did not work properly, kitchen appliances did not work and furniture was falling apart. It is now Jan 9, 2010 and no one from the company has returned my call and our deposit has not been refunded. The house was not very clean and the basement was not what we rented. The people who did get the upstairs were incredibly loud. I attempted to contact several people from the company while we were there they did not answer there phones, emails or text messages. The broken things were never attended too. I would never rent from this company again.

2. Vacation rental home fraud

Advertised as oceanfront. In reality is oceanview with direct beach access. Home sits behind two homes and the walkway goes in between. Can see the ocean, but not the beach from the home. Realty company insists it is oceanfront.

3. Aurora House, Orcas Island, misleading

Their website used to have a misleading picture, not taken from the property, that gave you the impression that you were next door to a beach and that it was " . . easy to launch kayaks from . . ." This was the primary reason we rented the house. We complained that both the picture and the discription were misleading. The owners have said they did nothing wrong and refused us a reasonable partial refund. They have since dropped the picture and discription. The house is fine but the owners were uncooperative.

4. AVOID: 127 Treehaven Court, Kenwood, Ca FILTHY HOUSE

We had the single worst vacation experience with this house.
This house was in such poor condition that we ended up leaving after less than 15 hours.

This review will hopefully inform any potential renters of what they can expect:

On July 19, 2010, my wife and I, along with our14 month old daughter and dog, arrived at the house. The owner and his wife were present and quickly gave us a tour of downstairs of the house, focusing mostly on the outside. We did not see the stairs or the upstairs until after they left. Here is a short list of the problems which made the house uninhabitable:

• Carpet Stains: After the owners left, we began to unpack the car and started to bring items upstairs. It was then that we noticed the many dark stains and encrusted dirt on the carpeted staircase leading to the upstairs, as well as in the hallway and inside the master bedroom. As best as we could tell, the stains appeared to be a combination of animal urine, feces and dirt. I was so dismayed I didn’t remove my shoes at any time we were inside the property. I do not believe the carpets were cleaned before our arrival and appeared not to have been cleaned (especially the pet stains) in a long time.

• Flies: There were groups of flies hovering in the family room and in the breakfast area. This made the prospect of sitting in those rooms very concerning as flies can carry disease. Although we tried to kill the flies with Lysol (rather than Raid) that did not solve the problem and flies did not disperse.

• Loveseat Stains: It was around that time that I also noticed the condition of the loveseat in the breakfast nook. It was covered in dried dog slobber, dog hair and a layer of grime. I did not sit on this loveseat even once as a result of this condition.

• Unclean Kitchen: While unpacking to place food into the refrigerator, I noticed there was a large purple oozing liquid inside the bottom of the freezer. The refrigerator was very dirty inside and outside and would have required a heavy cleaning. The front of the kitchen cabinets and front of the microwave had food residue which indicated none of this had been cleaned and certainly not professionally cleaned. The refrigerator had no room inside for us to place our drinks/milk/food and would have required us to throw away some of what was already in the refrigerator.

• Lack of Closet/Storage Space: The upstairs bedroom had no closet space for any of our clothes. Instead it was packed with the owners’ clothes and only two small drawers remained for our use. The kitchen cabinets and especially the refrigerator had no room whatsoever to put anything into. Again because of the condition of the carpets upstairs, we could not put our items on the carpet out of concern for contamination.

• Other Items: The owners have admitted the Koi pond has an algae problem. It does as it was covered in unsightly and smelly algae. The swimming pool was frigid and had no heater rendering it useless. The stove vent did not work. The light in the guest bath did not work at all. There were no drapes in the master bedroom making it impossible to sleep in.

At approximately 9:00 p.m. that same day, we had enough and called the owners to tell them we were unable to live in this house for the next five days. We told them we were vacating the next morning even though we had no place lined up to go to. That next morning at 9am we packed up and left the house. We went to the Stanford Inn in Mendocino and had a great time with the rest of our vacation. All in all, we lost about two days of our six day vacation dealing with this unfortunate house.

To date, the owners have returned only the security deposit of $250 and kept the other $2,866.
